Cities Texts

To look through the Urban Constelations of Blanca Moreno is to go through a geography of visions. Wide and aerial her views of Bogota weave the image of a city that sparks of under the eyes of the artist. Attractive and bottomless in its inmensity. Bogota is presence, and theme of infinite variations. It appears behind a courtain of trees, it looses itself towards the horizon, lights up with its color lights and its centripetal force. It awakens under the dense smog; and tones down , rihythmic, and fainting, towards the west.

Blanca has painted the city from places that no other artist has done maybe. She prefers to speak of the city from its boundaries as if fom those places where the natural frontiers stop its advance, one could unveil its deep soul. Or she abandons herself in de deafening bottom of the cener streets and she discovers the terrible beauty that links the oppressive existence to life. Her glance is mostly aerial as a strategy to grasp a caleidoscpic and uncontainable reality.

This is a daring work. “I paint what could be a postcard. I am a woman of this XXI century who marvels herself with electric lights” she says with fine irony. One needs courage to paint what one sees in times were art seems to be destined to the elaboration some of refined and sometimes monological concepts, and resists as obscene any atempt of representation. Blanca Moreno’s work does not pretend to vindicate any truth , but upholds stroke by stoke the authenticity of her vision.

… But what emerges with persistence is the cromatic structure that holds and recreates the object in the paintings..

One has to look carefully Blanca Moreno’s landscapes to realize that they are not descriptive or realistic. This is not the main intention. They belong to a very personal genre of landscape painting. We recognize in them it is true, natural and city shapes, but what emerges persistently is the cromatic structure, that holds up and re-creates the object in the paintings. This is the subtle thread that bonds her early works that explored the spaces in gothic cacthedrals and cities in Europe, and the present work , product of an investigation, in our forms and colors.

¿What can lead a contemporary artist to become interested in our landscapes? ¿What takes her to defend paciently her expresion? Only a deep conscience of the authenticity of her search, the decision to renounce to a name and become a chanel for the preservation of memory and recognition of our enviroment. Blanca Moreno’s painting is brave, It resists classifications. Covering with trees her canvases, setting firmly their roots with a meditative pace, it defies the brutality of humanity that goes on destroying , ignoring and blind. With Urban Constelations she manifests the powerfull and dramatic beauty of this city. Overall there is a full cofidence in the power of art , that can oppose war, obblivion and disregard. With the moisture of the air, the antiquity of the rocks, and the incandescence of late afternoons in Bogotá.
